Power in Language, Culture, Literature and Education
In one of the contributions to this edited volume an interviewee argues that "English is power". For researchers in the field of English Studies this raises the questions of where the power of English resides and which types and practices of power are implied in the uses of English. Linguists, scholars of literature and culture, and language educators address aspects of these questions in a wide range of contributions. The book shows that the power of English can oscillate between empowerment and subjection, on the one hand enabling humans to develop manifold capabilities and on the other constraining their scope of action and reflection. In this edited volume, a case is made for self-critical English Studies to be dialogic, empowering and power-critical in approach.

Money, Banks and Business in British and American Literature, Culture and Language
This monograph should be of interest to a wide range of readers because money, banks and business have been an integral part of history of all societies as well as an experience shared by each one of us. The book is divided into two parts - the more extensive part one comprises:- several texts that follow advancement of capitalist economy in 18th and 19thcentury Britain with all the concurrent developments and problems, involving individuals, communities and societies, as they are reflected in contemporary prose fiction from Defoe, through Jane Austen, Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell and Dinah Craik, to George Meredith and Anthony Trollope; and in a special genre of the so-called it-narratives,- a chapter devoted to the outstanding present-day Argentine writer Ricardo Piglia who censures greed for money, hypocrisy and corruption,- another chapter which traces the formation and role of American civil religion. The second part of the book is devoted to the selected linguistic aspects of human enterprise and contains two chapters, the first of which discusses strategies and methods of effective teaching/learning business English, while the second concentrates on strategies used in translating legal and business texts.

Image and Identity
This volume looks at the way that perceptions of Scottish identity have changed through the centuries, from early medieval to modern times. 'The idea of Scotland as a single country, corresponding to the realm of the king of Scots, and of the Scots as all the kingdom's inhabitants, may only have taken root during the 13th century.' – Dauvit Broun 'The 18th century is marked by a period of often competing Scottish identities, and the emergence of the British state as a complicating factor in the equation.' – R. J. Finlay 'Scottish identity has never been a fixed, immutable idea, whether held in the head or in the gut . . . some of the most enduring myths of Scotland's Protestant identity were, like Ireland's Catholic identity, creations of the 19th century: they included Jenny Geddes as a Protestant Dame Scotia, throwing a stool into the works of an Anglican-style church, and the Magdalen Chapel in Edinburgh, the home of a staunchly Catholic graft guild throughout much of the 1560s becoming the "workshop of the Reformation" in John Knox's time.' – Michael Lynch

Citizenship, Education and Violence
The focus of this book is to offer a humane rocesponse to dealing with violence. An interpretive analysis is presented in order to think differently about violence in schools and about how a citizenship education of becoming can deal with the unpredictable consequences of violence in its own potentiality. It seems to the authors that, given the confident onslaught of violence, there is nothing left to do but to offer insight into the nature of violence itself and, by so doing, to search for unexplored ways of humane response and being. The authors are not pretending to hold a magic wand that will sanctify schools into the safe zones that they ought to be and as which they should serve in any society. This would be both presumptuous and misleading. What one is looking and hoping for, however, is a renewed engagement, a slight tilting of the perspective, so that something other than how we have always responded to violence perhaps will emerge. The authors are confident that such a deconstructive approach to violence in schools through the lens of a reconsidered view of citizenship education can assist them and others to wrestle with its potential for destruction that can be changed into options for co-belonging of a non-violent, if not peaceful, kind.

How can one forget culture and heritage?
One can forget culture and heritage by not actively engaging with it, by being disconnected from one's roots and community, and by prioritizing other aspects of life over preserving and celebrating one's cultural identity. This can happen through assimilation into a different culture, lack of exposure to one's own cultural traditions and practices, and a lack of interest in learning about one's heritage. Additionally, societal pressures and discrimination can also contribute to the erasure of one's culture and heritage.

Is there still Prussian and German culture in western Poland?
Yes, there is still a presence of Prussian and German culture in western Poland, particularly in areas that were historically part of Prussia and later Germany. This can be seen in the architecture, cuisine, and traditions of the region. Additionally, there are still German-speaking communities in some parts of western Poland, particularly in areas near the border with Germany. However, it's important to note that the influence of Prussian and German culture has been significantly diminished due to the shifting borders and population movements that occurred during and after World War II.

Language and Value
This volume represents the first substantial collaborative work from Chinese and Western scholars on philosophy of language. We believe that recent developments in the Anglo-American philosophy and Chinese philosophy of language not only suggest a tableau of shared problems, but also a number of similar methods and goals. It is the goal of this volume to juxtapose these recent philosophical developments to illustrate the similarities between the traditions, but also to spur common dialogue and hopefully efforts to jointly engage shared philosophical problems. The issues engaged range from the role of cultural and biological factors in linguistic competence and language use, to figurative speech in different languages, the comparative study of work in semantics and philosophy, and the role of language in establishing the legal and ethical norms and values. Culture and Anarchy
Culture and Anarchy is a series of essays by Matthew Arnold. According to his view advanced in the book, "Culture is a study of perfection". His often quoted phrase "[culture is] the best which has been thought and said" comes from the Preface to Culture and Anarchy: The whole scope of the essay is to recommend culture as the great help out of our present difficulties; culture being a pursuit of our total perfection by means of getting to know, on all the matters which most concern us, the best which has been thought and said in the world, and, through this knowledge, turning a stream of fresh and free thought upon our stock notions and habits, which we now follow staunchly but mechanically, vainly imagining that there is a virtue in following them staunchly which makes up for the mischief of following them mechanically. The book contains most of the terms - culture, sweetness and light, Barbarian, Philistine, Hebraism, and many others - which are more associated with Arnold's work influence.
